While Apple has always sold iPhones in its own stores, recent initiatives such as the iPhone Upgrade Program and Apple Trade-In have made the company a serious contender for your phone-buying business.

When you buy a phone from Apple under the iPhone Upgrade Program, it comes as a certified unlocked device. You can pair it with an existing plan and retain your unlocked status. Besides, you can switch carriers at will before you complete paying off your device. This is one of the biggest advantages of buying your iPhone directly from Apple.

That's the lowest price we've seen for this unlocked phone at Amazon. In our Pixel 7 review, we called this phone an amazing value that costs hundreds less than the iPhone 14 or Galaxy S22, yet delivers pretty much everything you could want.

Galaxy Z Fold 4: from $1,099 w/ trade-in @ Samsung (opens in new tab)The Galaxy Z Fold 4 makes multitasking from your phone easier than ever. It sports a new taskbar and Android 12L, which is made for tablets and foldables. Samsung also delivers better cameras, a wider front display, and a brighter main screen in a sleeker package. In our Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 review, we called the Editor's Choice phone the best foldable you can buy right now.

Google Pixel 6 Pro (5G/128GB): was $899 now $514 @ Amazon (opens in new tab)The Google Pixel 6 Pro packs a Google Tensor processor, 120Hz display, incredible camera array and a beautiful refreshed design. It's one of the best value smartphones on the market and thanks to this Amazon deal it's now an even better bargain.

Unlocked OnePlus 8 Pro: was $999 now $799 @ Amazon (opens in new tab)The OnePlus 8 Pro is one of the best phones out there. Amazon has the 256GB model (unlocked) on sale. You can expect top performance from the Snapdragon 865 processor, fast charging, and solid photos from the four rear cameras.

And at the risk of complicating things further, I should also point out that Best Buy is running a promotion right now where if you buy a Pixel phone there and activate it on Verizon, the store will give you a $100 Best Buy gift card and a free 2015 Chromecast. So that's another possibility to consider -- though it appears buying the Pixel from Best Buy is equivalent to buying it from Verizon, which is a relevant distinction to keep in mind for the next few items.

Only you can fully weigh the pros and cons of buying the phone from one source vs. another for your own personal situation, but if you want my advice, it's simple: If you're going to get the Pixel, get the Pixel from Google. Regardless of anything else, putting such a big asterisk after one of the phone's most important benefits is a risk I wouldn't want to take.

The best phone deals have been found by people who go to Best Buy and go to the store that is offering these deals. If you go to another Best Buy store because they have deals on a phone, you will not get the same deal as when they show you at the Best Buy that you originally bought your phone at.

My best advice for you is to give every phone a try at a brick-and-mortar store. There's nothing more helpful than holding and interacting with the phones in person and seeing what satisfies your consumer needs.

When smartphones were just starting to become a thing, the most obvious way to get one in the United States was simple: visit your wireless carrier of choice and buy whichever device the salesperson convinced you was the best.

Speaking of getting phones fixed, carriers also usually offer their own insurance plans, which could be cheaper or more comprehensive than plans offered by manufacturers. This will give you some peace of mind if you are buying a very expensive new flagship!

If you are tech-savvy and can afford the full cost of a smartphone in one transaction, we highly recommend buying unlocked. The pros far outweigh the cons when it comes to buying unlocked phones vs carrier phones.

Google's Pixel A-series phones have been our favorites for a few years now, and that hasn't changed with the Pixel 6A (8/10, WIRED Recommends), though its lead is narrowing. It's powered by Google's Tensor chip, which means you're getting some of the best performance for the money, and it supports all the same great (and helpful) software smarts as the flagship Pixel 6 series. My favorites include Assistant Voice Typing to type up accurate messages with just my voice and Hold for Me, so I never have to listen to hold music. I also love its size; at 6.1 inches, the screen is comfortable to manage with one hand. Speaking of, the OLED panel gets plenty bright, making it easy to see on sunny days. (Sadly, it's stuck at a 60-Hz screen refresh rate.)

If you want a no-compromises best-of-the-best kind of smartphone, then look no further than Samsung's latest Galaxy S23 range (9/10, WIRED Recommends). Whether you opt for the 6.1-inch Galaxy S23, the 6.6-inch S23+, or the massive 6.8-inch S23 Ultra, these phones are chock-full of high-end features, from the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset that keeps even the most demanding games running beautifully to the wonderfully fluid and bright 120-Hz AMOLED displays. Battery life has improved across the board, with the S23 comfortably lasting more than a day and the S23 Ultra hitting nearly two full days with average use.

Google's Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro (8/10, WIRED Recommends) are the most refined Pixels yet, and they remain the best values you can get in Android. For just $599, the Pixel 7 gives you practically everything you'd want, from wireless charging to a 90-Hz screen refresh rate. It's a bit smaller this year, with a 6.3-inch screen that's 25 percent brighter. The Pixel 7 Pro retains a 120-Hz refresh rate on its larger 6.7-inch AMOLED screen. Both feature Face Unlock, but this isn't as secure as a fingerprint, so you can only use it to unlock the phone. In typical fashion, there are several smart software features powered by the new Tensor G2 chip, like audio message transcriptions in Android Messages, and Photo Unblur, which deblurs old photos in Google Photos, even if they were captured on an old point-and-shoot. 041b061a72
