What Day Of The Week Is Best To Buy Airfare

The Tuesday tip we've all heard is a convenient but outdated myth that ignores the fact that airfare pricing is constantly changing. Airlines tweak their pricing by the hour to try to win over more customers and undercut their competitors. So don't assume you're getting the best deal on your flights just because you're booking on a Tuesday night.

what day of the week is best to buy airfare

Take it from us: Our team of flight deal analysts spends all day, every day searching for the cheapest fares to send to Thrifty Traveler Premium members. There are no best days to book flights: The best fares and sales don't just happen on only one day of the week. In fact, we find cheap flights, mistake fares, and unadvertised award sales every single day of the year.

Other sites and online travel agencies may do it, but airlines aren't manipulating airfare pricing based whether you've searched for a flight two or three, or 13 times. Our team searches hundreds of routes daily. If airlines were playing these tricks with cookies, we'd never be able to find a flight deal!

That means flying on off-peak days: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays are often much cheaper days to fly. Shifting your departure and return dates by just a day or two can save you hundreds of dollars. So stretch that weekend into a slightly longer weekend and save on flights.

If you don't have the time to commit to searching for cheap fares frequently, we've got you covered. Get instant alerts to the hottest domestic and international flight deals, mistake fares, and award sales we find with our Thrifty Traveler Premium+ service. We find flight deals seven days a week, 365 days a year. And we're already seeing deals for travel for winter 2024.

Here's the key: Avoid booking within 30-45 days before your flight. Some airlines offer decent flight prices the in the weeks leading up to departure, but these are few and far between.

In general, and especially pre-pandemic, airlines hike prices for last-minute flights. They assume only business travelers and travelers who need to be somewhere soon are that buy airline tickets last-minute. Airlines know these travelers will pay whatever it takes to get there. And trust us, you don't want to get stuck in that position a few weeks before a trip.

According to some Google Flights analysis, the lowest prices for Thanksgiving are usually found 36 to 74 days before departure, with the lowest point on average about 52 days out. For the lowest fares, those numbers mean you'll want to start searching for Thanksgiving flights around Sept. 10. The lowest fares are typically found around Oct. 2. And the best deals are all gone by about Oct. 19.

With the Christmas holiday, the range is even bigger. If you're looking to travel domestically over the Christmas holiday, the lowest flight prices can be found, on average, between 20 and 88 days ahead of time. For the lowest fares, you want to start searching for domestic Christmas flights around Sept. 28 and the best deals are all gone by about Dec. 5. Need to get home for Christmas?

However, if you want to ensure that your seat will be available, then Friday evenings are the best time to book flights because most airlines stop selling seats after this point, in preparation for weekend departures.

You should book your flight on a Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning for the most flexibility. There are still plenty of seats available, but not so many that the fare is much more expensive than on other days of the week.

In general, booking flights on a particular date works best. However, certain seasons, such as Christmas and summer vacations, have higher airfare costs. From December to February, the cheapest price for an international trip to Europe is around $1,000.

One of the reasons that Tuesday is the cheapest weekday to buy flights is that major airlines release their seats on different days and at different times of the year. This means you may find a better deal booking flights for a specific time or month.

Skyscanner discloses that you can find the best flight deals on Saturday. If you want the cheapest fares, book your trip as soon as possible. The best time of day to book flights is at 3 p.m., according to Skyscanner.

If you want to find the absolute best prices, you might want to try booking your holiday travel by the end of October for a cheaper fare. Experts recommend booking Christmas flights 61 to 90 days before the holiday. The airfare will be lower than when you book before or after this prime booking window.

The prime booking window for U.S. domestic flights is typically 3 to 3.5 months in advance, but many books at 5 weeks successfully. The prime booking window for international flights is around 2 months before the travel dates. This is when you can find the cheapest airfare. Watch the fare closely when you search flights for your timeframe.

One person may book their ticket days in advance, while the other may want to book only a few hours before. You could even purchase a package tour that includes flights and hotels together if you find this is the best deal for your group.

Flight prices can change, depending on the day of the week. Research has found that the best days to buy tickets are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Fridays are more expensive because Fridays are popular days to travel.

I'm talking about the annual Travel Trends Report by the Airline Reporting Corporation in partnership with Expedia. The release always looks at recent airfare booking patterns based on millions of transactions. The ARC facilitates transactions between the airlines and most travel agencies (both online and bricks-and-mortar) worldwide, so it has plenty of accurate data about prices and purchasing habits.

Book on a Sunday, not a Friday. Airfares change daily. Statistically, the cheapest day of the week for purchasing tickets is Sunday. On Sundays, people pay 15% less on average than people who book on Fridays, the week's most expensive day. The study doesn't explain why, but in past years, I've hazarded to guess that it's cheaper to book on a weekend because fewer business travelers are making reservations then. I'm not sure if that's the only reason this year, now that video meetings have taken the place of so much business travel, but Sunday is still the best day to buy.

More and more people are using handy travel apps and booking services to access the best rates on airfare, but what if you could cut through the red tape and score the best deals just by switching the day of the week you book your flight?

Sunday is widely considered the overall best day to book flights, according to most airlines and travel reporting agencies. Other analyses have pointed to Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday being the best days to book flights, at least domestically.

Hopper, a travel booking app, did some flight cost analysis of their own using nearly 8,000 of the most popular domestic flights. They found that Thursday was the best day to book flights overall with a modest cost savings of around $10.

The Airline Reporting Corporation (ARC) found that how far out you book your flight has big implications for your total trip costs. You need to aim for the perfect window of opportunity to get the best price on flights.

Feel free to step into your role as the early bird and cast the airline ticket as the worm. You might be able to save a few bucks by booking around 5:00AM, especially if you do it on the best day to book flights (Sunday).

Flight prices don't decrease significantly on Tuesday, but you might be able to save around 2% on flights booked on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. For the most cost savings, book flights on Sunday and plan to depart and return home midweek, not on the weekend.

The best time to book a flight is generally one to two months out for domestic trips. For international flights, book six to eight months out for the best deals. However, there are many factors that can lead to an increase (or decrease) in the price of an airline ticket.

When it comes to how long before traveling you should book your airfare, there is no single perfect moment (e.g., exactly 60 days before your flight), but more of an ideal window or time frame, as mentioned above, during which you should be researching flights and ultimately committing to them before prices start to rise.

Although you may have heard that flight prices are lower on Tuesdays, the general consensus these days is that there is no single day of the week to score good deals on airfares. Deals get doled out every day of the week.

According to travel booking site Hopper, flying midweek will score you the best prices. Tuesday and Wednesday are typically the cheapest days to fly domestically. For international travel, midweek is also best. Hopper recommends departing earlier in the week (between Monday and Wednesday) and returning later in the week (between Tuesday and Thursday) for international flights.

Flight search sites like Google Flights and Kayak have a price-tracking tool, which allows users to set an alert for when the price changes on a route of interest. This is a great option for stalking your flight for the best price. 041b061a72
