Be skeptical and look for red flags. If you receive a suspicious call, text message, email, letter, or message on social media, the caller or sender may not be who they say they are. Scammers have also been known to:

The goal is to get you to click through to a web page where you'll be asked to provide personal information or open an attachment that may be malicious. The best way to avoid email fraud is to remain vigilant. Never click on a link in an email unless you are absolutely certain who sent the email and where the link is taking you. Remember: We will never use email to ask you for personal information such as your account number, card PIN, Social Security number or Tax ID number. See how to spot email scams.

Check fraud occurs when a criminal obtains money illegally using stolen checks or check information. Scammers often target the mail to steal checks and other personal or financial information with the intent to commit fraud and identity theft. If you lose a check or if your check is stolen, your personal information is exposed and your account information can fall into the wrong hands. Don't let this happen to you.

For example, if you received taxable interest of $10 or more, the payer is required to provide or send Form 1099 to you no later than January 31, 2023 (or by February 15, 2023, if furnished by a broker). If it is mailed, you should allow adequate time to receive it before contacting the payer. If you still don't get the form by February 15 (or by March 1, 2023, if furnished by a broker), call the IRS for help.

You can go online to check the status of your 2022 refund 24 hours after the IRS receives your e-filed return, or 4 weeks after you mail a paper return. If you filed Form 8379 with your return, allow 14 weeks (11 weeks if you filed electronically) before checking your refund status. Be sure to have a copy of your 2022 tax return handy because you will need to know the filing status, the first SSN shown on the return, and the exact whole-dollar amount of the refund. To check on your refund, do one of the following.

When completing Form 1040-X, don't forget to show the year of your original return and explain all changes you made. Be sure to attach any forms or schedules needed to explain your changes. Mail your Form 1040-X to the Internal Revenue Service Center serving the area where you now live (as shown in the Instructions for Form 1040-X). However, if you are filing Form 1040-X in response to a notice you received from the IRS, mail it to the address shown on the notice.

Phishing is the creation and use of email and websites designed to mimic legitimate business emails and websites. The IRS notifies the payer to start withholding on interest or dividends because you have underreported interest or dividends on your income tax return. The IRS will do this only after it has mailed you four notices.
